The resolution of erasing a few social media apps from my phone gave me extra time to live, and less stress to worry about
Health tip: It has been almost 4 years since I decided to not have a TV at home. The noise of commercials and the stressful news became unbearable to me. I remember an episode from last year when a friend was trying to talk to me about the stock market, and all the wars around the world. I respectfully told him: “I’m sorry, but I have no TV at home. I don’t know what you are talking about. I have so much going on as a divorced parent, so it’s become hard for me to keep track of everything” He responded, “Lucky you.”
But there was a crazy turn that happened this year. By the end of March with all the restrictions imposed, I started spending a lot of time in social media: Facebook, Instagram, YouTube–not only for my work, but because I became concerned about the reality we live in. Then I realized I was spending a long time in front of a screen, stressing, worrying, and many times putting my business and my personal life aside.
I learned through my experiences that now is an opportunity to appreciate all that we are going through, and to question our core beliefs and improve our way of life. So, here I am again, deciding to cut screen time. I don’t want so much in my life. I want to appreciate human interaction. I want to train my brain to stay present, and not get trapped with endless apps that function exactly to profit towards the opposite: Capture our attention and make money out of our precious time.
This is my challenge to you: How about focusing on family, work, and friends only? Use screen time only for work and workouts (of course). Whenever you walk on the street, train your mind to stay present. Look at other people, look at the sky, feel the breeze in the air, anything that can keep your mind preoccupied. While you walk, stop looking at your phone.
Whenever you have the chance to exchange human interaction, the phone doesn’t need to be around. Consider erasing some social media apps from your phone. It is working for me! I used to look at a text message, and peek into Facebook notifications, and spend 5 minutes, or more in something that was supposed to last 10 seconds.
I have been living a less stressful life, and feeling way more present.
We live the life we choose to live. Consider this: You can be in Hawaii and still feel depressed.
